I have a Fancy Molly that is orange in color. She literally just had babies in the breeder tank…and I wanted to know how to tell when she was done…I’ve been sitting here for about a half hour and so far no new babies…she still looks really full of eggs though…how long do I need to wait before I remove her from the breeder tank?

Hello. I have a molly fish. The fish is Black and gold. (Body-gold and tail is black. This is not about the fish being pregnant. I just don’t know how to contact you guys. Anyway, He/she is in a tank with 2 goldfish. They are all good with NO fighting. We got the molly about 3 months ago. About 3-4 days ago,She/he started acting weird. Not scared but just laying at bottom of the tank. She/he used to be really scared when i walked up to the tank and would swim away. But now she just sits in the same spot for ever! I don’t know how to tell if it is a boy/girl. How can i tell? He/she is kinda fat but not really. I heard that when a fish is having babies you can see dots near its behind. But i don’t see any what so ever. Is he/she pregnant? Please help and give back more information about why my molly is acting like this.

I keep a 36 Gallon Bow-Front Molly and Moon Tank. I went the same way you did Middle of the Road. Heavily planted with fake plants. I kill any live plant brought into the house. Live plants hate me! LOL Below is my set up.

7 adult Moons and 6 Adult Mollies. The females are ALWAYS pregnant!

The tank is set up with LOTS of fake plants and some left over Cichlid Stones. My Cichlids are way to big for the Small and Medium Cichlid Stones so i put them in with the Mollies and Moons. To give some nice hiding holes if they get stressed. In the Center of the tank there are what I call Fry Plants. These are the ones I got from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Penn-Hide-Out-Breading-Grass-Aquarium/dp/B0002565KM) between them is a larger plant for larger Fry that I also got from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Aquarium-Green-Plastic-Plants-Decoration/dp/B007VC9X2G) Then at the back are the Cichlid Stones and some other plants I stuck in-between the Cichlid Stones so the adults can’t get behind the stones to get to the larger fry hiding and resting there. The Substrate is river rocks that are about 10mm in size on average. New born fry can even hide in the substrate in the little spaces between the rocks!

Here is a pic I took tonight of some of the fry hanging out next to one of the plants – http://i.imgur.com/lbGOluG.jpg

A few pics that shows more of the tank – http://i.imgur.com/ozhPROG.jpg and http://i.imgur.com/90vMO2Q.jpg

There are currently several dozen fry in the tank. I lost track after reaching 32 during their feeding tonight! LOL Some will be heading off to my Local Pet Store as a trade in soon.
